    Shape optimisation using Computational Fluid Dynamics and Evolutionary Algorithms

    This is the author accepted manuscript.Optimisation of designs using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are frequently performed across many fields of research, such as the optimisation of an aircraft wing to reduce drag, or to increase the efficiency of a heat exchanger. General optimisation strategies involves altering design variables with a view to improve appropriate objective function(s). Often the objective function(s) are non-linear and multi-modal, and thus polynomial time algorithms for solving such problems may not be available. In such cases, applying Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs - a class of stochastic global optimisation techniques inspired from natural evolution) may locate good solutions within a practical time frame. The traditional CFD design optimisation process is often based on a ‘trial-and-error type approach. Starting from an initial geometry, Computational Aided Design changes are introduced manually based on results from a limited number of design iterations and CFD analyses. The process is usually complex, time-consuming and relies heavily on engineering experience, thus making the overall design procedure inconsistent, i.e. different ‘best’ solutions are obtained from different designers.     Automatic shape optimisation of the turbine-99 draft tube

    This is the author accepted manuscript.INTRODUCTION The performance of a hydraulic reaction turbine is significantly affected by the efficiency of its draft tube. Factors which impede the tube’s performance include the geometrical shape (profile), and velocity distribution at the inflow. So far, the design of draft tubes has been improved through experimental observations resulting in empirical formulae or ‘rules of thumb’. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in this design process has only been a recent addition due to its robustness and cost-effectivenesses with increasing availability to computational power. The flexibility of CFD, allowing for comprehensive analysis of complex profiles, is especially appealing for optimising the design. Hence, there is a need for developing an accurate and reliable CFD approach together with an efficient optimisation strategy. Flows through a turbine draft tube are characterised as turbulent with a range of flow phenomena, e.g. unsteadiness, flow separation, and swirling flow. With the aim of improving the techniques for analysing such flows, the turbomachinery community have proposed a standard test case in the form of the Turbine-99 draft tube [1]. Along with this standard geometry, with the aim of simulating the swirling inflow, an additional runner proposed by Cervantes [2] is included in the present work. The draft tube geometry is shown in Fig.1.     Redesign of Industrial Apparatus using Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimisation

Design optimisation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) often requires extremising multiple (and often conflicting) objectives simultaneously. For instance, a heat exchanger design will require maximising the heat transfer across the media, while minimising the pressure drop across the apparatus. In such cases, usually there is no unique solution, but a range of solutions trading off between the objectives. The set of solutions optimally trading off the objectives are known as the Pareto set, and in practice only an approximation of the set may be achieved. Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) are known to perform well in estimating the optimal Pareto set. However, they require thousands of function evaluations, which is impractical with computationally expensive simulations. An alternative is to use Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimisation (MOBO) method that has been proved to be an effective approach with limited budget on function evaluations [1].     Application of multi-objective Bayesian shape optimisation to a sharp-heeled Kaplan draft tube

    The draft tube of a hydraulic turbine plays an important role for the efficiency and power characteristics of the overall system. The shape of the draft tube affects its performance, resulting in an increasing need for data-driven optimisation for its design. In this paper, shape optimisation of an elbow-type draft tube is undertaken, combining Computational Fluid Dynamics and a multi-objective Bayesian methodology. The chosen design objectives were to maximise pressure recovery, and minimise wall-frictional losses along the geometry. The design variables were chosen to explore potential new designs, using a series of subdivision-curves and splines on the inflow cone, outer-heel, and diffuser. The optimisation run was performed under part-load for the Kaplan turbine. The design with the lowest energy-loss identified on the Pareto-front was found to have a straight tapered diffuser, chamfered heel, and a convex inflow cone. Analysis of the performance quantities showed the typically used energy-loss factor and pressure recovery were highly correlated in cases of constant outflow cross-sections, and therefore unsuitable for use of multi-objective optimisation. Finally, a number of designs were tested over a range of discharges. From this it was found that reducing the heel size increased the efficiency over a wider operating range

    Peacock Bundles: Bundle Coloring for Graphs with Globality-Locality Trade-off

    Bundling of graph edges (node-to-node connections) is a common technique to enhance visibility of overall trends in the edge structure of a large graph layout, and a large variety of bundling algorithms have been proposed. However, with strong bundling, it becomes hard to identify origins and destinations of individual edges. We propose a solution: we optimize edge coloring to differentiate bundled edges. We quantify strength of bundling in a flexible pairwise fashion between edges, and among bundled edges, we quantify how dissimilar their colors should be by dissimilarity of their origins and destinations. We solve the resulting nonlinear optimization, which is also interpretable as a novel dimensionality reduction task. In large graphs the necessary compromise is whether to differentiate colors sharply between locally occurring strongly bundled edges ("local bundles"), or also between the weakly bundled edges occurring globally over the graph ("global bundles"); we allow a user-set global-local tradeoff. We call the technique "peacock bundles".     What guidance are researchers given on how to present network meta-analyses to end-users such as policymakers and clinicians? A systematic review

Consideration should be given to identifying optimal approaches to presenting NMAs that help clarify analyses. It is unclear what guidance researchers currently have on how to present and tailor NMAs to different end-users. Methods: A systematic review of NMA guidelines was conducted to identify guidance on how to present NMAs. Electronic databases and supplementary sources were searched for NMA guidelines. Presentation format details related to sample formats, target audiences, data sources, analysis methods and results were extracted and frequencies tabulated. Guideline quality was assessed following criteria developed for clinical practice guidelines. Results: Seven guidelines were included. Current guidelines focus on how to conduct NMAs but provide limited guidance to researchers on how to best present analyses to different end-users. None of the guidelines provided reporting templates. Few guidelines provided advice on tailoring presentations to different end-users, such as policymakers. Available guidance on presentation formats focused on evidence networks, characteristics of individual trials, comparisons between direct and indirect estimates and assumptions of heterogeneity and/or inconsistency. Some guidelines also provided examples of figures and tables that could be used to present information. Conclusions: Limited guidance exists for researchers on how best to present NMAs in an accessible format, especially for non-technical end-users such as policymakers and clinicians. NMA guidelines may require further integration with end-users' needs, when NMAs are used to support healthcare policy and practice decisions.     Calcaneal osteomyelitis presenting with acute tarsal tunnel syndrome: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cases of acute tarsal tunnel syndrome are rare. To the best of our knowledge, we describe the only reported case of acute posterior tibial nerve compression resulting from adjacent haemotogenous pyogenic calcaneal osteomyelitis.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A previously healthy 38-year-old Caucasian woman developed symptoms of acute tarsal tunnel syndrome in her right foot over a six-day period. No antecedent trauma or systemic symptoms were noted. Magnetic resonance imaging and bone scan imaging, followed by surgical decompression and bone biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>calcaneal osteomyelitis. Her pain and paraesthesia disappeared after the operation, while her inflammatory markers normalised during a 12-week course of antibiotics. After four years she has remained asymptomatic without any indication of recurrence.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case is not just unique in describing osteomyelitis as a cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome, because haemotogenous calcaneal osteomyelitis is in itself a rare pathology. We recommend considering infection as a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with acute tarsal tunnel syndrome.</p

    High Resolution MEMS Accelerometers to Estimate VO2 and Compare Running Mechanics between Highly Trained Inter-Collegiate and Untrained Runners

    BACKGROUND: The purposes of this study were to determine the validity and reliability of high resolution accelerometers (HRA) relative to VO(2) and speed, and compare putative differences in HRA signal between trained (T) and untrained (UT) runners during treadmill locomotion. METHODOLOGY: Runners performed 2 incremental VO(2max) trials while wearing HRA. RMS of high frequency signal from three axes (VT, ML, AP) and the Euclidean resultant (RES) were compared to VO(2) to determine validity and reliability. Additionally, axial rms relative to speed, and ratio of axial accelerations to RES were compared between T and UT to determine if differences in running mechanics could be identified between the two groups. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Regression of RES was strongly related to VO(2), but T was different than UT (r = 0.96 vs 0.92; p<.001) for walking and running. During walking, only the ratio of ML and AP to RES were different between groups. For running, nearly all acceleration parameters were lower for T than UT, the exception being ratio of VT to RES, which was higher in T than UT. All of these differences during running were despite higher VO(2), O(2) cost, and lower RER in T vs UT, which resulted in no significant difference in energy expenditure between groups. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNFICANCE: These results indicate that HRA can accurately and reliably estimate VO(2) during treadmill locomotion, but differences exist between T and UT that should be considered when estimating energy expenditure. Differences in running mechanics between T and UT were identified, yet the importance of these differences remains to be determined

    Capsular profiling of the Cronobacter genus and the association of specific Cronobacter sakazakii and C. malonaticus capsule types with neonatal meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis

    Background: Cronobacter sakazakii and C. malonaticus can cause serious diseases especially in infants where they are associated with rare but fatal neonatal infections such as meningitis and necrotising enterocolitis. Methods: This study used 104 whole genome sequenced strains, covering all seven species in the genus, to analyse capsule associated clusters of genes involved in the biosynthesis of the O-antigen, colanic acid, bacterial cellulose, enterobacterial common antigen (ECA), and a previously uncharacterised K-antigen. Results: Phylogeny of the gnd and galF genes flanking the O-antigen region enabled the defining of 38 subgroups which are potential serotypes. Two variants of the colanic acid synthesis gene cluster (CA1 and CA2) were found which differed with the absence of galE in CA2. Cellulose (bcs genes) were present in all species, but were absent in C. sakazakii sequence type (ST) 13 and clonal complex (CC) 100 strains. The ECA locus was found in all strains. The K-antigen capsular polysaccharide Region 1 (kpsEDCS) and Region 3 (kpsMT) genes were found in all Cronobacter strains. The highly variable Region 2 genes were assigned to 2 homology groups (K1 and K2). C. sakazakii and C. malonaticus isolates with capsular type [K2:CA2:Cell+] were associated with neonatal meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis. Other capsular types were less associated with clinical infections. Conclusion: This study proposes a new capsular typing scheme which identifies a possible important virulence trait associated with severe neonatal infections. The various capsular polysaccharide structures warrant further investigation as they could be relevant to macrophage survival, desiccation resistance, environmental survival, and biofilm formation in the hospital environment, including neonatal enteral feeding tubes

    Do adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome differ in empathy and emotion recognition?

    The present study examined whether adults with high functioning autism (HFA) showed greater difficulties in (i) their self-reported ability to empathise with others and/or (ii) their ability to read mental states in others’ eyes than adults with Asperger syndrome (AS). The Empathy Quotient (EQ) and ‘Reading the Mind in the Eyes’ Test (Eyes Test) were compared in 43 adults with AS and 43 adults with HFA. No significant difference was observed on EQ score between groups, while adults with AS performed significantly better on the Eyes Test than those with HFA. This suggests that adults with HFA may need more support, particularly in mentalizing and complex emotion recognition, and raises questions about the existence of subgroups within autism spectrum conditions
